Key Challenges & Project Details

  • Project consisted of construction of steel sheeting bulkhead wall for Canton Crossing Development, a cornerstone in redeveloping the Baltimore Waterfront and Promenade System
  • Bulkhead installed in deep water with inhospitable subsurface conditions
  • Unique requirement – sheeting bulkhead wall that must be completely impervious to hydrocarbon leakage from the adjacent “brown field” area previously occupied by oil company
  • Construction included installation of 830 wall feet of AZ-steel bulkhead, reinforced with 11,000 tons Class I riprap on water side
  • Construction included installation of steel sheeting, backfilled with 14,000 tons of lightweight, aggregate fill on land side of steel sheeting
  • Steel sheeting capped with cast-in-place concrete
  • Demolition of existing concrete bulkhead after installation of new steel sheeting
  • After completion of bulkhead, the future promenade area was surcharged to enable re-grade of the site, followed by final compaction
  • Riprap and protection berm placed in front of driven sheet pilings to complete project
  • Project completed on time and under budget
  • Project completed with no recordable or lost time injuries
