Key Challenges & Project Details

  • Project consisted of removal of two piers at the abandoned Maryland Shipyard and Drydock site
  • Required removal of one pier to mud line
  • Required removal of superstructure of second pier
  • Required removal of part of old drydock breasting piers, consisting of concrete decks and concrete fill monopiles, as well as various barges and other breasting structures
  • Materials removed consisted of 80,000 SF of concrete, steel and timber piers
  • Project required that all debris be prepared off site for delivery to approved HAZMAT certified landfill
  • All materials transported from site by barges to disposal preparation area
  • At preparation area, material was unloaded from barges and reloaded onto trucks for shipping to certified hazardous material disposal site
  • All work completed in strict adherence to rigorous HAZMAT and safety standards
  • Work completed in a tight time schedule due to impending follow-up phases of construction
  • Additional challenge - substantial portion of removal work had to be carried out under water
  • Project completed ahead of schedule and under budget
  • Project completed with no recordable or lost time injuries
