Key Challenges & Project Details

  • St. Clement’s Island considered the birthplace of the State of Maryland
  • First Maryland settler landed on 400 acre island in 1634
  • Island has eroded to 40 acres, causing loss of the historic lighthouse to the Chesapeake Bay
  • State of Maryland began attempts to restore the island and prevent further land loss in 1965
  • Corman Marine has completed four other projects to restore the edges of the island and prevent additional island loss
  • Access for all material, equipment and personnel by water only
  • Project consisted of stone revetment replacement and access road repair
  • Clearing and removal of 650 LF of existing revetment
  • Excavation and installation of 650 LF of filter cloth and bedding stone
  • Installation of 4,000 tons of 1,000 to 2,500 pound armor stone
  • Repair of access road through island
  • Seeding, mulching, and placing topsoil for 650 LF of revetment
  • Project completed on time and on budget
  • Project completed with no recordable or lost time injuries
